What a fascinating crossroads the United States and most of the Western world is now at as technology and sharing of entertainment; that which is usually reserved for our personal time, has finally merged with out social time.
It’s only once board rooms start to hug psychologists and socioligists sit in with venture capitalist firms that we’ll all have a party and recognize the direction we are going in, is a direction we should push even harder for. Certainly reasonable controls must be put into place to protect hollywoods patents and the intellectual property rights of all, but S.O.P.A. and P.I.P.A. clearly have no traction and most anyone can tell that there is no way back from the place we were before.
Google is now poised to begin taking over productions of TV shows and the new distribution channels seem clearly on the cusp of becoming mainstream. Will creativity suffer? Of course not. We only merely need to look at the historical record to see that there is always a path forward for marketing the arts. Will the business models change? Yes, they already have? What does today’s paper say about this? Chances are you aren’t reading it…..actually chances are you are not sure what the local newpaper is even called in a growing number of US cities. (Of course that assumes there is a local paper, thousands have already folded.)
